If you don’t have a trip planned but are still looking for something to do with your family over the upcoming winter break, we have plenty of ideas for you! Most of these great indoor activities are just a short drive away, with the furthest one being just around two hours.

Located in the beloved Town Green is a skating spot open to the public. There is also the opportunity to skate on College Pond, located across from Burchard Pond. The town will post updates on their website, whether the skating is safe or not. As long as conditions are safe, families are welcome to attend.
Indoor Skating – Daly Rink, Newton

If skating outside is too chilly for you, head over to Daly Rink in Newton. If you visit their website, they have all of their public skate hours (offered most days) available to view. If you don’t have your own skates, no problem, Daly Rink has skate rentals for just $6.00.

Take the family or friends bowling at Needham Bowlaway. They call this spot a “hidden gem” and that is certainly for a reason. Located on Chestnut Street in Needham, this is an excellent activity during vacations. Needham Bowlaway is open every day except Mondays, with a wide window of hours each day.
Indoor Adventures – Apex Entertainment, Marlborough

Winter time is tough, especially during school vacations. If your kids are home and seem to have a lot of energy to burn off, definitely check out apex entertainment in Marlborough. Inside you will find bumper cars, a ropes course, an arcade, bowling, laser tag, go-kart racing and a sports stimulator. After you finish up with all the fun activities, grab some food at one of the spots inside!
Stargazing – Boston University Observatory

Although you can look at the stars on any clear night, but this spot nearby takes star gazing to a whole new level! Stop by Boston University’s Observatory for a free public event. You can use one of their high-power telescopes to look at the moon and all the stars. The event is open most Wednesday evenings, beginning at 7:30 P.M.
Tubing – Nashoba Valley Tubing Park

Just a short 30 minute ride, this hit spot is open weekdays 1 P.M. – 10 P.M. and 9 A.M – 10 P.M. on weekends. Take winter sledding to a whole new level with this fun activity. Tube down the mountains with your some of your favorite people on your own tube or, depending on the conditions, share with a friend! You can purchase tickets for $35.00, which will give you two hours of tubing. There is also an option to buy a package deal, should you see yourself going more than once!
Ice Castles – North Woodstock, NH

Although a bit further away than our other suggestions, it is definitely worth it! Take a trip to the beautiful ice castles in North Woodstock New Hampshire. If you visit these during night-time, they are completely lit up and absolutely beautiful. Walk through this winter wonderland with your family and then stop somewhere close by for a warm hot chocolate. There is also the option to book a sleigh-ride that takes you past all the castles, through the woods and passed the river. Make sure to book ahead of time to reserve your spot! You won’t want to miss out on this magical experience.
